NWFSC Activities Center Grand Opening & Open House

01/04/2013

Northwest Florida State College will hold a Grand Opening and Open House on Wednesday, January 16 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Niceville Campus for the college’s new Activities Center.

The major renovation of the 31,675 square foot building, formerly known as the College Mall, into the college’s Activities Center was the final phase of a $25.5 million project that also included construction of a new 3-story Student Services Center which opened in January 2012.

The new Activities Center houses the college’s Academic Success Center, which provides free tutoring and academic support for NWFSC students; a new college store operated by Barnes & Noble which includes a coffee shop that exclusively serves Starbucks coffee; and offices for the college’s extensive Student Activities program. Offices of Florida’s Great Northwest, an independent economic development organization, are also located in the Activities Center.

The Grand Opening event will include a ribbon cutting ceremony at 1:00 p.m. at the west entrance to the building, facing the new courtyard between the Activities Center and the Student Services Center (see attached map). The Grand Opening will showcase each of the three main aspects of the Activities Center, with open house, tours and refreshments, as well as recognize the newly named Janet Nadel Morell Conference Room in the adjacent Student Services Center. Recognition of the naming of the Morell conference room, located on the third floor of the Student Services Center in the Costa Leadership Institute, will include an additional open house as part of the overall event.

The late Janet Nadel Morell, formerly of Niceville, passed away in 2004. Family members Bob and Venita Morell of Niceville and Susan and David Cohen of Potomac, MD, established the Janet Nadel Morell endowment to name the large community conference room at the college’s Costa Leadership Institute. Earnings from the endowment will provide funds for equipment, instruction and program needs of the Costa Leadership Institute in memory of Morell, who moved to Niceville at age 79 and enjoyed the many community and cultural offerings of the college.

The public is invited to all portions of the Grand Opening event. Parking is available in the lots adjacent to the Student Services Center and the public should follow the signs to the Activities Center. Opening ceremonies begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Activities Center west entrance with receptions and open house of all facilities beginning at 1:15 p.m. For information, contact the NWFSC Office of Marketing & Public Relations at 729-5362 or the NWFSC Foundation at 729-5357.
